White House Cites Focus on Peace in Explaining Aid Freeze
A White House official confirmed the suspension on Monday, emphasizing Trump’s commitment to peace negotiations.
“The president has consistently emphasized his commitment to achieving peace. We expect our allies to demonstrate the same dedication to that objective,” the official stated.“We are suspending and reassessing our aid to ensure it actively contributes to a sustainable resolution.”
The Ukrainian Embassy in Washington declined to immediately comment Monday evening.
Oval Office Clash Over U.S. Assistance
The decision follows a tense Oval Office meeting on Friday, where Trump and Vice President JD Vance reproached Zelenskyy, accusing him of failing to show sufficient gratitude for the tens of billions of dollars in U.S. military aid provided since Russia’s invasion began in 2022.
Trump later took to Truth Social, accusing Zelenskyy of having “disrespected the United States” and criticized the Ukrainian leader for prioritizing military confrontation over peace efforts.
U.S. Has Provided Over $65 Billion in Aid

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., supported the aid suspension, calling it the president’s prerogative. However, Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, criticized the move, stressing that halting assistance at this critical juncture would be unwise.
“This is a pivotal juncture for Ukraine, and I was directly involved in managing the Ukraine supplemental package last year that delivered additional critical support. I do not believe halting our assistance is prudent,” Collins stated.
Europe Increases Support for Ukraine
Following Zelenskyy’s visit, European leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine. On Sunday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a $2.8 billion loan package for Ukraine and revealed that Britain, France, and Ukraine are working on a joint ceasefire proposal for the U.S.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed Europe’s solidarity, stating Zelenskyy is “never alone” on X. Furthermore, she pledged to work toward lasting peace. Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized honoring Ukraine’s struggle for sovereignty and dignity. He also expressed the need to uphold stability in Europe.
